Retirement of the Google Pay Standalone App

In February 2024, Google announced that it would discontinue the Google Pay app in the United States. Google Pay app users are encouraged to download the Google Wallet from the Google Play Store. Google Pay will be part of the Google Wallet.

It is important to note that Google Pay, in general, refers to Google's payment services that allow cardholders to pay online or in person with a card saved in Google Wallet. It is the Google Pay standalone application that has been discontinued. In-store and online payments via Google Pay remain unchanged.

The Differences Between the Google Pay App and Google Wallet

  • Google Pay App: was generally used for peer-to-peer and in-store payments.
  • Google Wallet: securely stores cards, tickets, passes, keys and IDs, and supports contactless payments (online or in stores).

Effective June 4, 2024, the Google Pay app is no longer available. According to the latest Google Support Article, the following features are no longer available in the standalone app:

  • No longer able to manage Google Pay balance from the Google Pay app.
  • No longer be able to send money to, request or receive money from others through the U.S. version of the Google Pay app.
  • No longer be able to view or activate deals in the U.S. version of the Google Pay app.

Important Note: Google Pay's tap-to-pay functionality is available with Google Wallet, allowing cardholders to continue to make in-store payments. Existing Google Pay users will be able to continue to use the tap-to-pay functionality and already saved cards will be unaffected. Also, there is no action needed from issuers. (i.e., You USE Google Pay and your cards are SAVED in Google Wallet. You Use Google Pay to pay online or in store with a card saved in Google Wallet.)
