Updated Note of September 9th
This note is for members whose Visa check card were temporarily shutdown on Friday,
September 5th . The cards were part of a BIN attack where fraudsters attempted to guess card
numbers and expiration dates through thousands of transaction attempts.
As a precaution, we temporarily froze your Visa check cards. After consulting with our Fraud
analyst on Monday, September 8th, we decided to unfreeze and reactivate cards for members
where no fraudulent purchases occurred. Your card is again active as of this morning,
September 9th.
To help protect your account, we suggest the following:
1. Monitor your account activity regularly using online and/or mobile banking and account alerts.
You may also temporarily disable your card.
2. Enhance the security of your Visa check card by using our CardNav mobile app, which
provides instant notifications of any card activity and allows you to put restrictions on your card usage.
Original Note: September 8th
As of Friday afternoon, September 5th, we identified that our Visa Check/Debit card is under what is called a BIN attack. This is a brute force effort to send through thousands of transactions where the fraudsters randomly generate debit card numbers and expiration dates.
BIN attacks have become more frequent over the last year. Banks, Credit Unions and other card issuers have all been targeted.
The fraudsters have not obtained anyone's card information. They are guessing this information.
The Credit Union's card monitoring systems are blocking just about all of these fraudulent transactions. A VERY LIMITED number of card holders' card numbers were successfully guessed by the fraudsters, so we have placed a temporary freeze on those cards. Remember that no cards have been successfully accessed. Your accounts are safe.
We will have additional information available on this by Monday.
We appreciate your patience and understanding.
