About 15% of our members with Visa check cards were subject to fraudulent attempts for online purchases at Walmart over the weekend. The vast majority were attempted on Saturday, August 2nd with some transactions attempted on Sunday the 3rd. The VAST majority of these fraudulent card purchases were blocked by the Credit Union's card monitoring system.
In the majority of cases the transactions were denied as the fraudsters did not have the correct card expiration date. In those cases, the Credit Union will replace your card at no charge. As usual, cards will also be replaced at no charge if the fraudsters had the correct card expiration date.
We apologize for the inconvenience. With today's technology, it is impossible to completely prevent this type of criminal activity. Stolen card information is posted on the "dark web", internet sites that sell stolen card information to fraudsters who attempt to use that information. This type of attempted fraud occurs at all financial institutions, targeting both debit and credit cards.
REMEMBER that fraudulent transactions that are posted to your account will be promptly refunded by the Credit Union.
If you did have a fraudulent transaction post to your account, please contact the Credit Union. The transaction will be refunded and a replacement card with a new card number and expiration date is on its way. You will have the ability to customize your card PIN number.
As always, we recommend that you use our CardNav mobile app to monitor your Visa check card activity.
