Beware: IRS Telephone Scams!

Con artists make unsolicited calls claiming to be IRS officials.

They demand that the victim pay a bogus tax bill. These calls are nothing more than a bullying tactic! Remember that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will never contact you by telephone to demand payment by prepaid debit cards, gift cards or wire transfers. The IRS will first mail an IRS Notice or Letter stating that you owe taxes.

The IRS does assign some tax debt collection work to licensed collection agencies, who may call you after you have received a letter from the IRS. To verify if the agency is authorized  by the IRS, get the agency's contact information and hang up. Then call the IRS at 800-829-1040 to verify if the collection agency has been authorized by the IRS to handle your issue.
